Students gain control over their own learning...

 

Two ways to help students gain control of their own vocabulary learning is to:

1) provide them with opportunities to make choices about which words they will study, and

2) to demonstrate how to use study skills such as flashcards.

 

One way to use student choice in vocabulary development is to create a variety of activities for students to choose from... the choice increases engagement, personalization, and students' sense of ownership in their learning. Try Student Choice Vocabulary or Own the Word.

 

               

Flashcards used to be made with paper index cards. Write the vocabulary word on the front and its definition on the back. Tell students to quiz themselves by first looking at both sides to memorize, and the just one side or the other to rehearse. There are now many websites that offer ready-made packs of vocabulary flashcards for algebra, geometry, biology, physics, history, art, etc. Check out the sites below...
